It all began with a passion – for honest food, genuine hospitality and Viennese tavern culture as it once was.
Owner Rado found his way into the restaurant business at the age of 15. What began back then with small tasks in the kitchen became his vocation over the decades. With experience, hard work and a lot of passion, the idea grew to create a place where people feel at home – just like they used to: cozy, down-to-earth and with good food on the table.
Today, Rado’s Gastwirtschaft is much more than just a restaurant. It is a home for everyone who loves Viennese cuisine, for regulars from the neighborhood and curious visitors from all over the world. This is the place to meet for a schnitzel, a spritzer or simply to have a good time.

Our restaurant can look back on a long and eventful history: it was once a cozy suburban heuriger in the days of old Vienna and is considered the oldest surviving traditional restaurant in the 9th district. Since it was founded in 1904 and lovingly renovated in 1956, much has remained as it was back then – in the best sense of the word.
We are at home in Alserbachstraße – a street whose cobblestones still exude the charm of times gone by and is now a listed building. Directly opposite was once the old market hall, and just a few steps away was one of the old city walls that once protected Vienna.
Our history does not begin in the kitchen, but with the people who have been coming together here for generations. During the Habsburg monarchy, our restaurant was a popular meeting place – not only for local workers, but also for artists, musicians and writers who found inspiration and company here. One of the most famous of these was the writer Heimito von Doderer, who achieved worldwide fame with works such as Die Dämonen and Die Strudlhofstiege – and regularly took a seat at one of our tables. Our restaurant is a place where the everyday and the artistic meet, where thoughts are exchanged, stories are born and traditions are cultivated – and it is precisely this atmosphere that lives on in our restaurant to this day.
Our cuisine combines traditional recipes with regional ingredients – fresh, homemade and prepared with love.
